New Music This Fall: Backyard Tire Fire, Grayson Capps, Common Market, Lafayette Gilchrist...

Dear Friends---

It's been a minute, but it's time to check in and bring you the latest and greatest from our humble home here at Hyena Records.

I say it every time and mean it every time, there's so much good music going on, sometimes it's hard to wrap our head's around. Though we were too busy to celebrate our birthday (those folks with keen marketing instincts would probably say we were crazy to let the opportunity pass us by), Hyena did indeed turn five years old in July. Believe me, that's a milestone these days when record labels come and go quicker than the duration of most Ramones' songs. If we get around to it, maybe we'll celebrate our sixth birthday in 2009. So here we go with what's going on around here...

BACKYARD TIRE FIRE
The Places We Lived

As many of you already know, Backyard Tire Fire is a killin' band from Bloomington, IL. They'd been on our radar for years. We were just waiting for the right opportunity to work with them. Fortunately, the time has come. On Tuesday, we released their new album, "The Places We Lived." There are so many facets to this band. There's an indie roots pop thing going on. The songs are often eccentric, full of character, but still like old friends with stories to share to which we can all relate. Onstage, they bring it every night. In September they'll launch a headline tour of the Midwest. In October they'll head out on dates with Rose Hill Drive, Los Lobos and Squirrel Nut Zippers. In December they'll join Reverend Horton Heat on the road. In between there will be a number of other dates that we'll be announcing soon. Here's some early love the new album has been receiving on the internets....

"The perfect primer for a group that truly is one of rock’s best kept secrets."
- PopMatters.com

"...they’ve gone from a little loveable band from the Midwest to “band to watch” status."
- Nine Bullets

"Backyard Tire Fire is a band defiantly swimming against the raging current of cookie-cutter corporate rock and alt-country bands. The Places We Lived is inventive, intelligent, genre-crossing good fun,"
- Blurt

"This impressive piece of work is a complete presentation built on solid songs, brief harmony, and homespun musicianship, and it shines."
- Glide Magazine

"The Places We Lived has obvious twang-rock influences, but with and abundance of piano peppering the album it moves far beyond. Whatever it is, it’s damn good. It makes me wish I had a beer and nowhere to go."
- Can You See The Sunset

"Equate the sound to how you feel when go to your nearest smokey bar, light a cigarette, order a bucket, kick back and kinda feel like you don't give a f*ck. In other words, it's a real good feeling you get listening to these guys."
- My Old Kentucky Blog

"Take everything you love about Patterson Hood’s emotional grit, The Old 97s classic barnburner footstompers, and the spirit Whiskeytown had when Ryan still had something to prove, and you’ve already got a good sense of what the band is about."
- Berkeley Place

GRAYSON CAPPS
Rott 'N' Roll

Man, we can't tell you how excited we are to be bringing you Grayson Capps fourth album with Hyena Records. The hardcore Grayson fans out there already know Rott 'N' Roll is what Grayson exudes. It's debaucherized and simultaneously sanctified. There's darkness to songs like "Big Black Buzzard," "Ike," and "Sun Don't Shine On Willy," but there's always hope too. It's not all shiny and nice, it don't make pretty for the top of the charts, but it has the honesty, insight and charm that moves souls. And there's some good fun on top of it with tracks like "Gran Maw Maw" and "Big Ole Woman." This is a record that probably best represents the energy that Grayson brings to his performances. Nobody should be sleeping on Grayson Capps any longer.

"If you like your music, rough, raw and honest, accompanied by lyrics that are a mix of poetry, bourbon, humour, and empathy, than you need to listen to Grayson Capps. Rott 'N' Roll will make you realize that you've never actually heard Southern rock before - everything else was just a pale imitation of this - the real thing."
- Blogcritics

"Grayson Capps is part country singer, part bluesman, part preacher, part vagabond and part poet."
- Hear Ya Blog

"Grayson Capps & The Stumpknockers play knock-down-drag-out-whiskey- laced rock and roll as if it were the last call for their souls to be saved."
- Swampland

This is out nationwide on September 9.

LAFAYETTE GILCHRIST
Soul Progressin'

Here again we bring you the fourth release from pianist Lafayette Gilchrist--a modern jazz masterpiece entitled Soul Progressin'. It's been building slowly and steadily for Lafayette. Unable to tour in the States as much as he'd like with the economics of bringing an eight piece band on the road being what they are, Lafayette has counted on the music press and word of mouth. Lafayette's shows around his Baltimore hometown are the stuff of legend. He's been around the world several times over, turning heads as the pianist in David Murray's Black Saint Quartet. But it's here with The New Volcanoes on this latest release where his funked-out, hard soul, blistering jazz vision is ultimately captured and defined.

"…the heir to Thelonious Monk."
– Entertainment Weekly

"...I haven't heard anything like Lafayette Gilchrist & The New Volcanoes."
- Howard Mandel, Jazz Beyond Jazz

"Imagine pianist Billy Preston in the FBI witness protection program; he hides out in the Washington, D.C., go-go scene and then the jazz underground; he invents an unlikely pseudonym to go with his new style: a sort of twisted, funky, neo-juke-joint avant-gut-bucket."
- Detroit Metro Times

"…it's Gilchrist’s cussed willingness to continually put a Baltimore- centric stamp on jazz that has made him the city's most respected pianist."
– Baltimore City Paper

COMMON MARKET
Tobacco Road

Hyena hasn't released much hip-hop in the last five years other than two groundbreaking albums by ISWHAT?!, but once and awhile something comes along that we can't pass up. For all intents and purposes, Common Market's Tobacco Road is the new jazz for current times. In a modern sense, its beats and rhymes flow with a rhythm akin to classic Bud Powell records. Lyrically, they have something to say that's both progressive and time-honored. Coming out of Seattle and affiliated with the Blue Scholars collective, anybody looking to the cutting edge of contemporary hip-hop will be hearing a great deal about this album in the coming months.

"...a cadence and voice reminiscent to Talib Kweli, RA Scion excels at spitting rhymes designed to motivate and educate while producer Sabzi serves up a bevy of head-bobbing beats featuring dusty soul samples and hard hitting drums."
- SPIN

"This is definitely 'conscious hip-hop,'...[that] creatively tweaks the Jurassic 5 formula of old-school phrasing."
- Music For Robots

"Common Market have created a work that's brought them closer to the region of hip-hop greatness. This is no exaggeration."
- The Stranger

"The intelligence of a Common Market track musically and lyrically is second to non and Tobacco Road is no exception."
- RapReviews.com

"Common Market is radical, revolutionary rap music."
- Three Imaginary Girls

THE BRIDGE
Blind Man's Hill

2008 has been a break out year for The Bridge. They've played over 200 dates in support of their self-titled record, including festivals like All Good, Camp Bisco and Mountain Jam. They were hand-selected by Mike Gordon to open six dates on his recent tour, on which they wound up sitting in with him almost every night. And somehow in the midst of all this, they recorded a new record---Blind Man's Hill. There's no better way to describe the music than a steaming gumbo of New Orleans rhythms, easy rollin' California rock and earthy American roots music inside a framework of expertly-crafted songwriting. There's another month and a half until The Bridge's Blind Man's Hill will be available, but it drops October 21, so mark your calendars and keep your eye on the Hyena website for a pre-order to start shortly.

In the meantime, if you don't have it yet, add The Bridge's Hyena Records debut to your collection here.
