The Rahsaanaissance continues! The legendary Rahsaan Roland Kirk is captured live on Brotherman In The Fatherland, a recently discovered and previously unreleased concert recording from March 3, 1972. True to record producer Joel Dorn and HYENA Records ongoing commitment to perpetuating the legacy of the one and only blind multi-instrumentalist, Brotherman In The Fatherland follows two previous Rahsaan Roland Kirk archive releases on HYENA: Compliments of the Mysterious Phantom and The Man Who Cried Fire. The performances here are high octane with Rahsaan’s straight-ahead tenor saxophone work coming to the forefront. Leading his band through a set of Rahsaan staples like “Pedal Up” and “Serenade To A Cuckoo,” he also presents a handful of dazzling interpretations, including “My Girl” and “Make It With You.” The showstopper and undeniable highlight, however, is a three song tribute to John Coltrane including “Lush Life,” “Afro Blue” and “Blue Train” that finds the jazz giant at the peak of his powers and straight up on fire.
